The UK's First Online Probate Legal Indemnity Insurance for Lay Personal Representatives

In January 2025, Insuristic launched Estate Protect Direct: the UK's first online quote-and-buy probate legal indemnity insurance available directly to lay executors and administrators.

Before Estate Protect Direct, the four core probate legal indemnity policies - Missing Will Insurance, Missing Beneficiary Insurance, Section 27 Insurance, and Early Distribution Insurance - could only be arranged through a solicitor or by manual application via an insurance broker. Lay executors administering an estate themselves had no direct online route to this cover.

Estate Protect Direct changed that. You can quote and buy any combination of the policies in minutes, with cover that runs in perpetuity and no excess to pay if you claim. Built-in discounts apply if a solicitor arranges the cover, or if you arrange it yourself and a solicitor has obtained the Grant.

Policies are underwritten by CLS Property Insight on behalf of Great Lakes Insurance SE, part of the Munich Re Group — one of the world's largest reinsurance organisations.

Who is Estate Protect Direct for?

Estate Protect Direct is designed to simplify probate legal indemnity insurance for a wide range of individuals and professionals involved in estate administration:

  • DIY Executors: If you're managing the probate process yourself, Estate Protect Direct provides easy-to-understand, affordable cover to protect you and the beneficiaries of the estate.
  • Executors Working with a Solicitor: Collaborating with a legal professional? Our platform ensures you can quickly arrange the necessary insurance while working alongside your solicitor.
  • Solicitors: Estate Protect Direct gives solicitors a quick way to arrange legal indemnity insurance for a client with no account or Terms of Business Agreement needed. If you handle probate regularly, it's worth considering our solicitor-only version, which has bigger discounts and fewer questions to answer.

It takes about 2 minutes to get a quote.

Cover Options

You can choose one or more of the following insurance covers:  To learn more about each cover, click the product name to visit each specific product page:

  • Early Distribution Insurance: Removes the need to wait the recommended 6 months before distributing the estate with insurance protection against claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975.
  • Section 27 Insurance: Insurance against claims from unknown creditors without the need to purchase expensive Section 27 notices.
  • Missing Will Insurance: Insurance protection against the risk of a newer Will being found after the estate has already been distributed.
  • Missing Beneficiary Insurance: Peace of mind protection against claims from a beneficiary that was missing or unknown when the estate was distributed.

Please note: Early Distribution and Section 27 Insurance policies are not available for estates in Scotland.

What is the average cost per policy?

The cost of the cover will depend on a range of factors, including:

  • The size of the estate;
  • The complexity of the estate;
  • The likelihood of a claim being made; and
  • If a solicitor is involved or not.

As of June 2026 the average cost per policy across our entire client bank is as follows (including Insurance Premium Tax)

  • Early Distribution Insurance: £223
  • Section 27 Insurance: £223
  • Missing Will Insurance: £450
  • Missing Beneficiary Insurance: £450
