Financial Asset Search

How does a Financial Asset Search help you?

Executors have a duty to locate all the assets due to an estate and must demonstrate that they have conducted a thorough search of where assets may have been held by the deceased.

An Asset Search helps executors, personal representatives or administrators:

  • Perform due diligence when undertaking your duty as Executor or Administrator.
  • Reduce risk of locating assets in the future and incurring expensive legal costs.
  • Reduce administration time whilst ensuring all relevant financial institutions are contacted.
  • Uncover accounts & policies that may not have been known to the family or Executor.
  • Maximise estate value in a cost-efficient way.
  • Mitigate HMRC fines for understated Inheritance Tax.

What Asset Searches can be done for Free?

  • My Lost Account: A free service to help you find lost bank, building society or National Savings & Investments accounts held by the deceased. You can request a search for free on the My Lost Account Website.

  • Gretel - A free service to help you trace pensions, life insurance policies, shares, bank accounts, investments and child trust funds. It is suitable for executors, administrators or personal representatives. Visit the Gretel Website to find out more.

  • The Pension Tracing Service: The Pension Tracing Service is a free government service. It searches a database of more than 200,000 workplace and personal pension schemes to try to find the contact details you need. You can phone the Pension Tracing Service on 0800 731 0193 or visit the pension tracing service website to search their online directory for contact details.

Worried About Disputes or Claims against the Estate?

As an executor or administrator, you can be personally liable for defending claims and covering losses if you don’t have Probate Insurance, even when the claim is made against the estate, not directly against you.

Contentious probate isn’t limited to courtroom battles; it often begins with disagreements over who inherits, how the estate is handled, or whether the Will is valid.

These situations may involve someone being left out of the Will, a dispute over how much someone should receive, concerns about how the Will was created, or confusion when no Will exists. Claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 are particularly common.

Such disputes can delay the probate process, increase costs, and expose executors to personal liability. It’s far better to identify and address potential risks early, before they escalate.

Arrange a FREE consultation with a Contentious Probate Solicitor.

They’ll assess your situation, confirm whether a claim is unlikely (which may help you qualify for Early Distribution Insurance), or provide expert guidance on how to protect both yourself and the estate from risk.
